American
consulate attack suspects arrested
KARACHI, July 24 : Pakistan
Rangers (Sindh) on Wednesday have arrested Muhammad Ashraf Khan, who was
involved in planning and providing money for purchase of Arms and ammunition
used in attack on American Consulate in Karachi on June 14 in which 12
people were killed while 52 sustained injuries. The individual, resident
of Nazimabad No 3 belongs to Harkatul Mujahideen Al Alami and holds the
office of treasurer in the organization. He was also part of the consultative
body of said organization headed by Muhammad Imran.During investigation,
he revealed the names of his accomplices involved in various terrorist
activities namely Muhammad Imran, Muhammad Hanif alias Ayub, Sharif, Naveed
ul Hassan, Jamil, Mustafa, Kamran alias Atif and Ahmed alias Danial.The
accused also hatched conspiracy and provided money for purchase of vehicle
for attack on cavalcade of President General Pervez Musharraf on April
26.He has been handed over to police for further investigation and necessary
legal action.
Preston adjudged best among
participants
ISLAMABAD, July 24 (Online): Preston Institute of Management, Science
and Technology was adjudged the best among 50 participants at the recently
held Exhibition of Computer, Telecom/Office Equipments and IT Institutes.
The exhibition entitled "Digital Dimension: Avenues of Information
Technology" was organized by the Pakistan Science Foundation/PASTIC and
Technological Information Promotion System (TIPS) at local hotel here yesterday.
More than 50 institutions comprising IT Institutes, Internet Service
Providers, Software Developers and Telecom and Computer Hardware providers
took part in the Exhibition.
Institutions of Higher Learning who set up their stalls at the exhibition
were Preston Institute of Management, Science & Technology (PIMSAT),
International Islamic University, Hamdard University, APTECH, Comsats Institute
of Information Technology, City University, Peshawar and Imperial Institute
of Information Technology.
New Chinese ambassador meets ACM
ISLAMABAD, July 24 (Online): Zhang Chunxiang, the newly appointed Ambassador
of Peoples Republic of China called on Air Chief Marshal Mushaf Ali Mir,
Chief of the Air Staff at Air Headquarters, Chaklala Wednesday.
The Ambassador People's Republic of China and Air Chief Marshal Mushaf
Ali Mir, Chief of the Air Staff remain together for sometime and discussed
matters of mutual interest.
Earlier Liu Guomin, Chairman CATIC of Peoples Republic of China also
called on Air Marshal Salim Arshad, Vice Chief of the Air Staff at Air
Headquarters, Chaklala and discussed the matters of mutual and professional
interest.
Bar associations assure President
of their support
ISLAMABAD, July 24 (Online): Describing the proposed constitutional
amendments imperative for maintaining balance of power between all power
brokers, the bar associations, lawyer's community and retired judges have
assured the president of their full fledged support in introducing the
constitutional amendments aimed at keeping check and balance in the prevailing
situation of the country. A 35-member delegation of lawyers and legal experts
called on the president on Wednesday as part of consultative process initiated
by the government for seeking opinion of people from all walks of life
on the proposed constitutional package. The meeting held in open and frank
manner.
Expressing their views on the package, the members of the delegation
pointed out that these constitutional amendments were indispensable to
overcome political crisis of the country in future.
It was encouraging that the government was bringing these amendments
within the decision of the Supreme Court, they remarked.
A majority of the members while welcoming the amendments said that
the package would strengthen the country and ensure protection of the interests
of common man.
They called certain amendments like constitution of National Security
Council and balance of power among power brokers as inevitable. About some
amendments they suggested that these could be debated. All the participants
lauded the integrity, selflessness and open mindedeness of General Musharraf
saying that it was the first chance in the history of the country that
the president of the country was taking the people and media into confidence
on matters of national interest in open and free manner. The members of
the delegations assured the president that they would hold open debate
with all the bar associations of the country on these amendments and take
them into confidence besides working to create consensus on this matter
in the country. President said that their proposals would be highly appreciated.
